What Those Occupying Might Want

I’ve heard many people in the media ask this week: “What do those occupying Wall Street want?” I’m not there occupying, but I would like to offer this answer.

1. We would like to create a solar economy. Germany supplies 30% of their energy from solar and they have the climate of Vermont. We have a f%#ing desert. Get with it.

2. We would like enabling legislation and subsidization to create this solar economy. We’ve been doing it for oil and gas for 100 years. Perhaps the record profits of Exxon and BP that were generated from an illegal war could be seized and used for this purpose.

3. We would like to see members of the Bush administration indicted for crimes against humanity. Might as well throw in the House and Senate too because they could have stopped it.

4. We would like for polluters of the Gulf of Mexico to be held accountable. If true reparations were to be satisfied, their assets would have already been seized.

5. We would like an end to the “wars” in Iraq and Afghanistan.

6. We would like for marijuana to be legalized.

7. We would like for big pharma to be more regulated. Especially, when it comes to our food supply.

8. We want a reversal of the law that gave corporations personhood.

Those are the first things that come to mind. Feel free to add your suggestions.

Who is Michael Drake and What Does He Do?

In January 2010 I worked as a housing director in Little Rock. The position, funded by the stimulus plan involved rapidly re-housing homeless people. While it was really great passing out $150,000 to homeless people to find a place to live, I thought it would be even greater to follow it with a jobs bill before the money ran out.

That didn’t happen.

Yesterday, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius came to speak  at Philander Smith College in Little Rock. The event was advertised on the radio and city’s web site as a free luncheon that was “open to the public.” It was part of a so described “Healthy Food Summit.” Word was out that Sebelius would also be discussing the President’s new jobs bill.

I was working on a project up until noon but hopped on my bicycle just before it began to ride over for the luncheon and presentation. I figured I would be welcomed with open arms at a university that actually has a social justice initiatve

After navigating all the city and state employees’ Tahoes and Denalis passing through campus looking for the event, I locked my bicycle to a gas pipe (There was no bike rack) and entered the gymnasium. The two women at the table in the foyer asked me “Who I was with.” I told them that I was just an interested citizen and let them know that the radio and the city’s press release said that the event was open to the public. They then asked me if I had registered. I told them that I was unaware that registration was necessary. One of the ladies then told me in confidence that they had been letting several people through but had just been told to stop.

About this time, a dapper fellow named Michael Drake with the City of Little Rock approached to inform me that I could not enter. I told him that I wasn’t really interested in the free lunch as much as I was the presentation. He still didn’t want me in. I then told him that I would love to write about the Secretary’s visit for my blog. I asked if I might attend as a member of the press. He answered by asking two security guards to escort me from the campus.

Many times in the past. I would have made a scene.

I should have made a scene.

But I’ve come to expect this from our government. Creative, resourceful people have no place in government here. We ask hard questions. We expect for people to do what they say.

We are wrong.

I tried to call Michael Drake at the number listed on the press release after I got back to work but it was listed as disconnected. I was not surprised.

The guy in this video, Representative John Fleming from Louisiana, unwittingly makes the case for why his ilk should not be in office. He’s a doctor who also owns 33 Subway sandwich shops and a few UPS stores in Northern Louisiana. If he owned a legitimate, local business he wouldn’t have time to fool around on the East Coast. He would be working.

Subway, UPS and countless other national chain stores would not exist without cheap petroleum and perpetual war funded by the likes of Fleming.  Fleming became only the second Republican since Reconstruction to win his region’s position and was endorsed by the American war criminal Dick Cheney. He won by 356 votes.

Unfortunately for Americans, Fleming is the norm for congress. The paper robber baron. He owns businesses run by national chains that put local shops out of business. I wonder how many of his Subway and UPS locations were made possible due to T.I.F. deals in which he had a hand?  I just got off the phone with his local newspaperman and asked if that might make a good future story. Look for a boost in Subway advertisements!

Many small communities have forgotten what local shops look like. When a guy like this goes to Washington, what is he bringing back to his community? More jobs at Subway? What chance does alternative energy have when rule-makers insure their capacity to truck frozen bread and meat from sea to shining sea? I truly hope that voting machines have been rigged and that people are not dense enough to let short-sighted “doctor’s” like this guy write prescriptions for their futures.

Perhaps, instead of building his fast food empire, the good doctor should go back to school and learn that Subway isn’t really good for you. Maybe he has reasoned that bad food is good for the doctoring business?

Maybe it is time for class warfare to create some jobs.

On Championship.

I have nearly exhausted myself searching for champions in a box of losers.

Nearly.

On Child Safety

My son came up to me in my shop today with a tube of plumber’s caulk. He said, “Dad, this says keep out of reach of children.”

“Then go put it somewhere you can’t get to it,” I replied.

We Will Get Fooled Again (But Not By You)

I will be debuting the recording of the Song: We Will Get Fooled Again
(But Not By You) - A song for Governor Mike Beebe at 8:30 AM CST
today, April 5, 2011 at http://www.anthro.tv  (It will be in Live Video format)

Lyrics to the song can be found here: http://www.anthro.tv/fool.htm

The song is a heart felt request and is to be TAKEN LITERALLY. I have
been trying to meet with the Governor since 2005 regarding
environmental issues in Arkansas. This is my last request before I
began legal proceedings which will prove that the Governor and his
staff have willfully disregarded human, animal and plant life in
violation of existing Arkansas law.

Thanks to all who played on this track. In order of appearance: Barry Poynter, Alex Piazza, Helen Davey, Dondi Nelsen, Skylar Nelsen, Lennie Dusek, Verna Dusek Bryan, the Vincenterator. Grace Retnyop.

Please share this with everyone you know.
